Guiding Beacon

The disused ferry guidance beacon on Hawes Pier, erected ca.1817. The ferry was augmented by the Forth Bridge (seen in the background) in 1890 and finally replaced by the Forth Road Bridge in 1964.

Short hexagonal masonry tower, on circular stone plinth. Masonry of tower pebble-rusticated, with shallow inset arches, polished ashlar base course, moulded cornice with blocking course. The N and S arches have human masks for keystones.
