Prince Edward Theatre, London

Designed by Edward Stone and built in 1930, this theatre is named after the then Prince of Wales, later the king who abdicated - Edward VIII.

1930 was the year of theatre building when six theatres were build in London's West End: Prince Edward, Cambridge, Phoenix, Whitehall, Adelphi and Leicester Square.

The Prince Edward was converted into the London Casino in 1935 but was severely bombed in 1941 and rebuilt as the Queensbury All Services Club for troop show radio broadcasts. After the war it reopened as the London Casino, and in 1954 changed to the Casino Cinerama Theatre.

In June 1978, it was redesigned again and returned to be the Prince Edward Theatre. It opened with the world premiere of Evita.

It has also hosted Mamma Mia, Chess, Martin Guerre, Mary Poppins and Jersey Boys; and since May this year, the Miss Saigon revival.
