Nezara viridula (Stink Bug)

They eat green beans, which is where I found him. The stink part has to do with protection from predators, but I haven't smelled it. As far as I can figure out, this is the fifth instar of its life cycle. The eggs and the hatchlings have evaded me so far, but I've watched the colorful spotted third instars and strongly contemplated shortening their plant-destroying lives, but in the end I couldn't do it. After I've watched them for so long and photographed their intricate beauty, it felt really not nice. A few more holes in the bean leaves may change my mind.

In the meantime, just admire this little jewel.
