THE BIG ADVENTURE: day 19

Opal mine, Coober Pedy. These mullock heaps spread as far as the eye can see around this town! In the foreground you can see an access shaft through which the miner is winched down into his mine. Tunnels veer off from here, hunting for the seam in which the opals are to be found. What a life!!

The temperatures here range from 0deg in the winter to over 50 deg in summer. The ground temperature can reach 65 deg ( or so out tour bus lady driver, said.

This is taken through the bus window as it is far too dangerous to walk around. There are holes like this everywhere!! People have stepped backwards and disappeared.

Onward to Port Augusta!! :)
