Dream, Sutton Manor Colliery

Another bike ride. 2 days in a row. This time in the company of the Sefton Park Socialists on their monthly outing. We wove around the old collieries on the edge of St. Helens: Bold, Clock Face, Cronton and Sutton Manor. This opened in 1906 and was closed in 1991. In the 60's it had employed 1500 workers. A sculpture, named Dream, has recently been opened on the site which is now largely covered in trees. It was created by the Spanish artist Jaume Piansa and is made of pre-cast concrete and Spanish dolomite. It stands 20 metres high and can just be seen rising out of the new woods from the M62.
