Iceland Day 5 - Fjallsalrlon

Thanks for the comments on my recent blips, I've caught up with the uploading after a couple of hectic and very long days, so there are a couple more Icelandic blips to look at.

Today has been all about glaciers and more importantly icebergs. We went to Jökulsárlón glacial lagoon. Firstly we went down to the beach to try and get some icebergs on the black sand beach. On arrival we saw a water spout from a whale. We watched it a bit and our guide, Kristian, told us that it was a Minke whale, just like what we had eaten on Sunday! I'm glad that we've done it that way around.

We took some pictures of the icebergs on the beach before heading across the road to go on a boat ride around the glacial lagoon which was full of icebergs which had calved off the Jökulsárlón Glacier. After the boat trip we walked around the lagoon shore taking more pictures, the colours of the bergs were amazing ranging from whites to blues via grey (from volcanic ash).

We went to Fjallsalrlon for lunch which is another glacial lagoon at the bottom of the glacier. This lagoon had some unbelievably blue bergs at the back the lagoon near the snout of the glacier. It was a totally peaceful place, far less touristy than the first lagoon. We then headed back to the beaches as the tide had turned and we hoped for more bergs on the beach, which there were, but so many people had been to look at them that there were footprints all around, so we decided to take photos of the sea birds, mainly Terns and Skewars. We're having an early finish today, although we might still venture out around the hotel. It's a puffin colony tomorrow.

This is a view of the central part of the Fjallsalrlon lagoon with the snout of the glacier in the background.
