Summer Solstice

Dear Diary,

Our beautiful weather continues and today we celebrate the Summer Solstice. Many think of it as the first day of Summer but in ancient Celtic tradition it is mid-summer. It is a day full of legends and mythology. Tonight the fairies dance! Dragonflies are, according to legend, fairies in disguise...a way for them to be around people without being recognized. Having a dragonfly land on you was a special blessing. (A skeptic told me that they hover around humans because our breathing attracts insects which they feed on but where is the magic in that kind of thinking?)

I was finally able, after days of trying, to photograph a dragonfly at rest to commemorate the day. Go out a build a fairy house! Find out how here.

Come away, O human child: To the waters and the wild with a fairy, hand in hand, For the world's more full of weeping than you can understand.

William Butler Yeats
