Cafe Culture (2014.170)

We hear much of trying to engender a continental "cafe culture" amongst UK bars and restaurants.

As I wandered along George IV Bridge to pick the boy up from a birthday party, the nonsense of it struck home.

I'm sure that this establishment is a perfectly nice place to enter and consume a variety of foods and beverages, but would I want to sit outside and do the same? On the edge of one of Edinburgh's internal arterial routes (this road leads direct to the city centre), as the temperature plummets towards the low teens?

Edinburgh's lovely, but it's not blessed with the climate or architecture for sipping espresso al fresco.
