Look what I met on my way home

This beetle is huge! I've never seen one so large. I'm not sure what type of beetle he is - anybody have an idea?

He was crossing the pavement on our street - heading for the road, unfortunately. I tried to get part of my shoe in the picture for scale, and I've had to mess around with the picture to make him show up, so the quality is probably terrible, but hopefully you can see what a handsome beast he is.
