The Crowning of the Beltane Queen

The Crowning is the most important part of the week. Over 600 children are involved in various costumed roles, though internet rules prevent me from showing any of the splendid pictures. No less splendid, however, is the sense of proper pomp and ceremony that surrounds this regal event. After the formal Proclamation of the Beltane Fayre at the town's Mercat Cross, with much referring to ancient documents, rights and traditions of the Burgh, there is a grand march the length of the High Street to the steps of the Parish Church for the crowning. Pipe bands and silver bands, from Peebles and visiting from surrounding towns, all add to the occasion.

Again, it was fun to join the local press pack and get first class views of everything; views I have never managed to secure in previous years. Clearly, there are perks to being a photographer!
