Standedge Tunnel
Unlike most other canal tunnels one is not allowed to go through the Standedge Tunnel unsupervised. Whilst we were waiting for our pilot from the Canals and River Trust to arrive this picture was taken.
It fell to me to steer the boat through the tunnel and it took a little over two hours to get through. I was given a hard hat and lifejacket to wear. I am glad of that because the roof is so low and irregular that I hit my head on the rock surface a number of times.
We emerged triumphant at the other end and found ourselves in Yorkshire.
With complete concentration to steer the boat it was the quickest two hours I have ever spent.
