Conwy

Another one of my favourite spots in North Wales is the walled town of Conwy, built by Edward I (the same Edward Longshanks of Braveheart fame). On one hand, I dislike the symbol of early English conquering that the castle and town meant. Edward I built the castle in 4 years - and did so as a way of reminding the local Welsh of his power. So that history sits uneasy with me. However, I love Conwy because it also has so many touches of the medieval - from Plas Mawr, the best preserved Tudor town house in Britain, to walking the remains of the town wall and exploring the ruins of Conwy Castle. Conwy offers a certain window into local Welsh history that other places don't capture.
