Here we go gathering nuts in June

Nuts are not gathered in June, nor May as the nursery rhyme says. Apparently the verse may have its origins in "gathering knots in May" meaning the hawthorn blossom that is in bloom during that month.

There are lots of hazel nuts appearing in the hedges now but they have all gone by the time we would like to pick them for ourselves!
