Liriodendron tulipifera

This is the first time I have seen the flowers on the Tulip Tree and now understand why it is so called.

A deciduous member of the Magnolia family, tulipifera spp are native to eastern USA and can grow up to 50metres tall and as such was used for dugout canoes.

The timber has many useful properties, including house interiors and coffins, and the nectar produces a dark honey.
