Small elephant hawk moth

Piddlehinton, a village near us, had one of these days when lots of gardens are open and you can wander round and snoop on people's back yards.

The last place we visited had won an award for wildlife - they'd made a flower meadow, a wildlife pond, and lots of other good things. The night before a local moth expert had set up a moth trap and had got what she said was just about the best yield she'd ever had anywhere, including lots of privet hawk, elephant hawk, and small elephant hawk moths. She had them all in egg boxes, in a somnolent state, but obligingly let people hold them for inspection and photography.
