Dwindling

Last week’s snow is disappearing fast.

Castle Hill Peak (the rounded one on the left) is the highest part of the Torlesse Range. It is named after Castle Hill Station, a high country farm, on the other side. The bird soaring over The Gap is a starling which was flying less that 100 metres away from me.

Today I was looking out a window and saw an unfamiliar bird swoop down from the tall fir tree, snatch at something in a flowering Viburnum bush, and just as swiftly return to the tree. As I watched it tossed something in the air and caught it in its open beak. Then it turned sideways and I saw it was a kingfisher, a very rare sight around here. The prey was probably a drone fly.
