Insects - come hither!

Take almost any flower in the garden and look at the pattern made by the flower petals and their ornamentation. It is all designed to attract passing insects and entice them to visit the stamens and stigmas in the centre of the flower to act as pollen carriers, the pay-off being wonderfully delicious and nutritious nectar. With some flowers the 'come hither' signage can only be seen by looking in the ultra-violet part of the spectrum, frequencies that are very attractive to many insects. This one may have UV patterns also, but it has gone for a 'belt and braces' approach with this extremely persuasive 'neon sign' pattern in the visible (for humans) part of the spectrum as well. Who could resist!
