Dutch Skies

Storm building up over the Waddensea

A storm is brewing over the Waddensea at Moddergat, Frisia, The Netherlands.

Today I was at Moddergat with Jos and René, for a landscape photography workshop. Originally planned for yesterday, but we had to reschedule of course, because of the Dutch football (soccer) team making it to the quarter finals of the FIFA world cup. With that match ending way past midnight and the Dutch progressing to the semi finals, we could enjoy an evening of photography.

Providing the weather would cooperate with us, that is... The forecast wasn't that good, but since this workshop had already been postponed and rescheduled on several occasions, we decided to go for it tonight. As you can see, weather conditions were far from perfect but we did have fun and I was able to explain a thing or two to Jos and René before the rain forced us back to the car. In the end, we had only been out there for about 40 minutes. Fortunately we managed to make them count! This was the first photo I made, when there was still a bit of light to work with. I made it to show how the poles in the foreground and the lines in the mudflats behind them could add a sense of depth to a photo. I used a three stop ND grad to emphasize the drama in the sky which I think turned out really well...

Better somewhat bigger...
