Victoriana, Hackney

We have 4 hours between coats- I'm talking about painting here- and go to Sutton House a fascinating National Trust property in Hackney. One of its first residents was Ralph Sadler, of Wolf Hall fame. Thomas Cromwell had lived nearby. Hackney was then a village favoured by those who could afford to escape from the plagues in London. The house has seen several uses over the years, including school, church institute, billiard hall etc and was the home of the Blue House squat in the 1980's. It now shows off elements of all its former uses and has been restored to show how various parts might have looked through the ages. This study is in Victorian style and was originally a bedroom with what is claimed to be the oldest loo in the east end attached.
