Every Day Is A holiday!

Last Hurrah

Another fun day out on the high seas with our group of 6 who were the high bidders on our PRO boating/Roche Harbor Resort package. Today we are hoping to see whales.

First we headed towards Friday Harbor to a little bay across the channel, called "Parks Bay". We love to anchor there, as it is quiet and serene. We had some refreshments, enjoyed some sun on the front of the boat, took lots of fun photos, and had crab cakes for lunch! Everyone said they were the best crab cakes they had ever had...thank you Market Chef in Friday Harbor!! We also served a fruit salad and a chopped asian salad.

Next we decided (as time was ticking) that we better head back to the west side of San Juan Island to see if the whales were anywhere...and of course, they weren't! I checked the internet to see if there had been any sightings, and there were none. We headed back to port...all a little disappointed. When we got into Roche Harbor I suggested we drive over to Lime Kiln State Park to see if we could see the whales there...it's an interesting spot as they have the underwater monitor which pick of the sounds of the orcas if they are nearby. We learned a lot of interesting facts about the orcas, saw photos of the oldest female named "Granny" who is over 100 years old. We learned that the males have the straight fin, and the females have the curved fin...but males do not get the straight fin until they reach the age of 13, so up until then it's hard to know what sex they are. On our drive back to Roche Harbor we saw the "eagles" ...20+ having their nightly feeding...a site to behold.

The day ended with a wonderful dinner hosted by our group of 6...on the deck at Roche Harbor...it was a beautiful night...and this photo was taken after dinner. We will not forget these last few days...we have had so much fun with these folks, and I know that we will have many more "get togethers" in the future!!!
