The Water Tower

Cammo Tower, an early 19th century water-tower is located a half-mile (1 km) south southwest of Cramond Bridge. This round tower is associated with the former Cammo House, the ruins of which lie a quarter-mile (0.5 km) to the north northwest of the tower itself.

Built for John Menzies in 1693, the estate was later passed to the Watsons of Saughton. The most memorable thing about Cammo though is that it is thought to have been the inspiration for the House of Shaws in Robert Louis Stevenson's novel Kidnapped.

“There are two things that men should never weary of, goodness and humility; we get none too much of them in this rough world among cold, proud people.”
Robert Louis Stevenson, Kidnapped
