Today's action: Blue light run nightmare

It has been quiet for a while. Not many calls and the calls that were there were generally not that serious. It's summer vacation. Less traffic on the roads and less incidents in homes. But today was different, and it started with a minor incident.

Two police cars were making their way to an accident involving a scooter. Someone got hurt, but the extent of the injuries apparently were not known yet. So two police cars were rushing through traffic, with blue lights and sirens, to get to the scene as quickly as they could. But they never got there.

Crossing a major intersection the first police car made it to the other side. The second collided with a car driving on the road they were crossing. As a result the police car spinned and rolled over. The two officers in the car got injured and were taken to hospital.

Why did this happen? I don't know. It's subject of investigation. But my thoughts immediately were going to the signs we have here in The Netherlands at railway crossings: "Wait until the red lights go out. Another train may approach." Did the other car driver think it was safe to drive on after the (first) police car had passed by, not realising a second was right behind it? It could be the case, but like I said, I don't know.

Of course the police drivers get trained to drive their emergency vehicles in the most demanding circumstances. And maybe the policedriver was thinking too easily that the other car would wait for the second policecar. Again, I don't know.

All I know is that two officers suffered injuries in their line of duty, fortunately the people in the other car all walked away uninjured. Hopefully the injuries are not that severe. But whatever the outcome, this certainly is a blue light run nightmare.
