The National

Another stunning performance from The National, this time in the majestic setting of the Usher Hall. The whole band were fantastic, great lead guitarist, amazing drummer and the brass section who also played keyboards. Sometimes simultaneously with playing trumpet.

Matt, the front man, personifies troubled genius. When not singing, he paced round the back of the stage and spent most of the first hour gripping the microphone with his eyes closed. By the end he was walking through the crowd, standing up on the front barriers and generally causing the security team to look decidedly worried.

But no wonder he's troubled. After all, according to the lyrics he's afraid of everyone, has been carried to Ohio on a swarm of bees, been carried on the shoulders of cheerleaders and it's a terrible love.

As with the last time we saw them, this is how they finished. Absolute spine tingling magic.
