Thought I'd take a wander down to the local pond earlier and was surprised to see it's still iced over. The snow's been gone for at least a week up here and I can't recall the temperature dropping too low at night since. It just goes to show how really cold it must have been and how deep frozen the water was.

One down side to this though is that every bit of jetsam that's been thrown onto the pond to test the ice over the past month is still there and the whole place looks absolutely manky. There's rocks and bits of trees, there's cans, bottles and wheels from a golf trolley. There's a a pair of green wellies and numerous traffic cones on there along with every conceivable type of take-away container known to man. When the ice does eventually thaw some of that is going to sink to the bottom of the pond and will no longer be a blot on the landscape, but much of it is still going to be there. The poor ducks, the coots, the heron and the pair of resident swans are going to have a bit of a time of it navigating though all the junk that's left.

Combined with the dreich weather today and the lack of any colour around the pond our so-called 'Beauty Spot' is looking rather sorry for itself just now. Roll on Spring I say.
