today's mystery insect is a...

male ichneumon wasp. Got up early to walk up the hill to find the wasp spiders and played with the phone and helicon remote. I also found this guy and was totally puzzled. Two pairs of wings, strange eyes, long antennae. Showed it to my dad who was also puzzled. So we consulted an expert in Stuttgart (thanks Dr Bechly) who suggested it was a male ichneumon wasp, probably a Ophion luteus. These are parasitic wasp which lay their eggs in other insects.
