My

great-great grandfather would be pleased to be remembered today, or even more so yesterday, Liberation Day in Stanley. As a young Sapper subaltern he laid out the town and moved the capital of the Falklands there, between 1843 and '45. He named it, rather sycophantically, after the Colonial Secretary of the day (Lord Stanley was Secretary of State for War and the Colonies - an interesting combination of responsibilities). He would have been most irritated by the Argentine occupation, and delighted when Max Hastings, followed by elements of the Royal Marines and British Army, took Stanley back again.

Richard Moody went on to be a Maj General and to attempt to control the gold rush in British Columbia as its first Lieutenant Governor. This bit of his uniform is heading back to BC to be displayed in the Royal BC Museum , who already have another of his jackets. This is thanks to good friend C., who as of yesterday can aspire to be a Bishop (and a very fine one she would make) who is heading west with her family for a holiday.
