Slough

Drove north about an hour and a bit for a bike ride out to what was once an island in this flat farm land drained and broken by sloughs - it is just gorgeous land. Then this morning I read about sloughs trying to understand the balance between what is man made and what is natural - am truly I am mystified. Clearly dams man made and added to their function in draining the land for agriculture. But i think their paths are more or less natural.

BUT am not mystified about how meandering and wonderful they are to follow in a small boat - maybe a canoe would be nice. (Notice the decayed boat in front left) This is looking north towards Bellingham, the last city before you hit Canada and Vancouver, BC.
