San naomhóg

I had a first on Tuesday! My first trip in a hand-made naomhóg (currach) in west Kerry in the company of the man who built it! Bob took two of us out from Castlegregory pier to a small island in the bay on which he was reared. It is now abandoned - almost. The house still stands and the island's occupants are all sheep!
The day gave me a true appreciation for challenges which islanders faced when he was young.
Island life is disappearing in our country and so are many of the islands themselves due to erosion.
