At 1.30pm this afternoon the temperature was reading 30C in the shade. An hour later the sun nudged the thermometer and the temperature rose to 35C.

I know my Australian relations regard us a wimps for wilting in this heat - but at least we don’t put gloves and scarves on, when it drops to what we regard as a warm and pleasant 18C.
