Grovetown Lagoon

Early this morning a number of hardy souls drove out to the Grovetown Lagoon and Wairau River armed with a variety of cameras and tripods. We are members of the Marlborough Camera Club and we were on one of our regular field trips. Although we were small in number we made up in quality. And despite the extremely cold grey day we had fun. First stop was at the edge of the Wairau River near the Wairau Rowing Club headquarters. Some teams of rowers were out on the water training. A group of four girls from the Marlborough Girls College Rowing team made their preparations and went out on the river. We captured images of the rowers and their trainers on the water. They certainly are dedicated and highly motivated groups of youngsters. There were older rowers out there as well.
Later on we drove back along the road to take a walk along the track bordering one side of the lagoon. Since 2003 a restoration project has been underway to restore the Grovetown Lagoon and environs to its original state as much as possible. A wide number of organisations and community groups are involved in this project and they have achieved much over recent years.
I reckon that today was the coldest day of the winter so far. It was grey and bleak and we needed to wear multiple layers of merino clothing in order to keep warm… Perhaps tomorrow will be warmer….
