Claims to fame

Wherever we've been in Wensleydale we've come across Tour de France paraphernalia - the area has obviously been enjoying its time in the spotlight. This picture is of the hotel where we stayed - the Wheatsheaf in Carperby.

In fact, the Wheatsheaf has other claims to fame. As the plaque beside the yellow bicycle indicates, James Herriot stayed here on his honeymoon in 1941. A copy of the hotel register shows Herriot's signature (under his real name Alf Wight) and a few lines below is another entry that reads simply "Greta Garbo, Hollywood". Apparently the actress stayed there when she was entertaining the troops in nearby Catterick Garrison in 1942.
