Black kite in the palm oil plantation

Bryan and I were given a ride to the other end of Bugala Island with a Canadian Jewish guy we met in the hotel, who lives here and had promised to keep an eye on a friend's empty house. It was a good opportunity to see what it is like beyond the town and we bumped our way in his old jeep to visit a refuge for sexually abused girls where we had a cup of tea with the founder of the place, a Belgian guy called Bery, and met some of the girls he has protected over the last 15 years.
Sadly, much of the island is being given over to palm oil plantations like this which requires the natural forest to be cut down with all the knock on effects to the ecology of the region. However, the black kites were loving the palm nuts and swooped around the vehicle as we drove. We'd never seen one quite so close as this.
