Musée national du Moyen Âge

(Back blip)

This little ivory carving of Vierge et l'Enfant/Virgin and Child (Paris, 1240-1250) was one of the artworks I loved most at the Musée national du Moyen Âge (formerly Musée de Cluny) in the 5th arrondissement in Paris.

I couldn't help wondering about all the people over the centuries who treasured this carving and passed it along to someone else, in a long chain that led to me gazing upon it with such pleasure in 2011.
