Lord Howe Trees

This is a Banyan Tree Ficus macrophylla ssp. columnaris with its numerous trunks it is one of the most noticeable trees around the lower areas of the island - its huge size and habit of dropping aerial roots make it difficult to work out whether the one in the image is one or three trees.

We visited the museum today which I thought wouldn't have taken that long to look through but it was really engaging; interesting history (including details of the HMS Nottingham that ended up on Wolf Rock back November, 2000 - only the second boat to hit it in 165 years!!) and stories of reclaiming threatened species. A major and complex project is just about to commence to address the island rat problem which impacts native fauna but is not really a health issue.

Well, it is out to dinner tonight and then off home tomorrow!
