Cornwall; day 5. Open all hours

Today is a big day; Anniemay and I are on first shift in the gallery. It’s our first time being left in charge and the morning shift is a big deal. Keys to be located, doors and cashbox to be unlocked, credit card machine to be activated. Then all the paraphenalia of attracting custom.

I wander down the hill towards the harbour to erect banners and signs and bring back our breakfast from one of the many cafes, while Anniemay sorts out the money.

As I wait for our breakfast to be made I have a chance to see the place gradually come alive. All of human life is here. Families are making their way to the beaches, stall holders are setting up their wares on the front - everything from baubles to boat trips.

The gallery is located up a steep and narrow hill a few hundred yards from the harbour, away from hustle and bustle. As well as dealing with actual sales, we have to keep a tally of every visitor; the numbers give an idea of which times of day are most popular. It’s sunday morning and things are a bit quiet. When I return with our vittles there’s a seagull wandering around inside. I don’t think we’re allowed to count it.
