The Nike of Samothrace, Goddess of Victory.

As the Tour de France reaches Paris I like to imagine the Goddess alighting on the podium as if on the prow of a ship spreading the news of Victory in this monumental athletic contest. According to ancient custom, I imagine her distributing the Insignia of Victory - a crown, palm, fillet, trophy of arms or in this case a yellow jersey.

In fact, each day throughout the Tour, various insignia have been awarded to the day's victors by young women that perhaps have a passing resemblance to this Goddess.
