Mathematical Tiles

This strange, tumbledown little house, formerly a coal merchants, is in Lewes and, judging by the window box, is still occupied. Its round upper bay is clad with black glazed mathematical tiles, made to resemble bricks, which were popularly used in Sussex in the 18th and early 19th century. The flank wall is clad with cobbles.
