Stephenson's Tunnel

RobT and I both had a day off work today. We decided to go to Grosmont so that RobT could experience the Art Cafe and have lunch.

When we got to Grosmont it was closed so we ate at The Old School.

After lunch we had a walk to the engine sheds of the North York Moors Steam Railway. To get to the sheds you have to walk through this tunnel.

It was built between 1833 and 1835 by George Stephenson as part of the Whitby to Pickering Railway. The first carriages to run through the tunnel were horse drawn and only carried 10 passengers.

The tunnel is 130 yards long, 14 feet high and 10 feet wide. Its very dark when you get to the middle!
