Pomegranate

Sounds of construction woke me up this morning. Our hot days mean an early start for people who are working outdoors. The house being built up the hill and across the road from us is getting a roof. We walk past the site regularly on our morning walks, and a popular pastime with us is to try and second guess the contractor. We have walked through the house when they are not working on it, and tried to figure out the room arrangement. It seems to be a collection of small closets! And it has a turret!

The house a few doors down from us on our street has been vacant and neglected for five years so we are pleased that someone has bought it and plans to fix it up and sell it. He, his wife and their two dogs appeared at our door a couple of weeks ago to introduce themselves, find out more about the neighborhood, and talk to us about what they were planning to do.

My walk with Ozzie, who is enjoying being back to "only dog" in our house, took us past both worksites. The house under construction seems to have had a bit of a slowdown. We watched them dig the septic system, sink a well , build a foundation, and dig up the road for the underground electrical connection to the pole across the street. I don't know if it's an aesthetic choice, or a county requirement that no power lines cross the street, it is certainly marred by the FOUR ugly power poles with uglier stuff on top of them which just went up down the road. If I had to look at those from my house, I would not be happy.

Step one of the renovation down the street is removing the jungle of vegetation that almost obscured the house. I assume this will also include the huge tree which is leaning toward the house at a 30 degree angle, clearly visible from our driveway.

Ironically, they are repaving the streets of the nearby subdivision. I say ironic, because the subdivision is relatively new, and quite pristine, while our county road is in imminent danger of reverting to a dirt trail.

For a peaceful, semi-rural community, things are pretty busy these hot days. The pomegranate tree we passed seems to be flourishing in the heat, and oblivious to the signs of progress in the area.
