Driverless cars

Take a good look at this. The time may well be approaching when cars won't have one of these any more. Driverless cars are no longer something out of a sci-fi movie, they are here now, being developed by car companies from Nissan in Japan to General Motors in America. Google is trialling them in California, and Volvo will have them running on the roads of Gothenburg within three years. Here in the UK they are being developed by a team at Oxford University and self-drive Fords are doing test track work at the Motor Industry Research Association in the Midlands.

I spent much of today talking about driverless cars, in the studio at Sky News and with a film crew on local roads for Channel 5 News. The motor car has existed for 128 years, but change is on the way. The future may well be safer, but not necessarily as much fun.
