Grey teal

Small dabbling duck, self introduced from Australia during drought seasons there. No considered endangered, though nearly 70% die in the first year of life.

They are protected in NZ but considered to be game birds in Australia, though about 6% are shot each season in NZ even so.

They are predated by eels, stoats, ferrets and harriers as well as hunters. At the wetland there's a huge flurry every time a harrier flies over.

they usually feed at night, or dawn and dusk.
