The Performing Arts Precinct ......

..... was supposed to be built on the site. But if the Town Hall is repaired this land will not be used and a smaller precinct will be developed in the distance beside the Forsyth Barr building, where there are plans for new homes for the Court Theatre, the Symphony Orchestra, and the Music Centre.

The council has a huge deficit in funding for earthquake repairs to the city, so there is still no certainty of just what will be built. In the meantime, and I suspect for long time, this area will remain a big bare open empty space.
