Cullera Castle

Today we headed to Cullera with our nephew James. The idea was the park up and catch the tourist train up to the castle, and then using the same train, go from the castle to the Dragut Cave Museum. Plans have a funny way of changing in Spain.

We arrived around midday, but soon discovered the tourist train (a little road tractor shaped like a train, hauling small carriages up and down the town) didn't start running until 5:30pm!

We decided to have some lunch and get hydrated, as we were going to claim the mountain to the castle that you see in this photograph. We climbed through a small village in the foothills of the mountain, before tackling the zigzag path you can see. It was very hot with little shade, so I was grateful that I had the foresight to buy 3 litres of water for the journey.

The view was magnificent, and the castle and chapel very grand. We got up there around 2:30pm, to find that it was closed until 5:30pm as well. We took the road route down, which was longer, but much easier on the legs as the incline was shallower. The next stop was an ice cream place before deciding to drive to the Dragut Cave Museum, which was on the other side of Cullera.

We got there just after 5pm.... and guess when was due to re-open after siesta time? 5:30pm! The museum was fun, but our guide only spoke Spanish, so it was fortunate that I read up on it the previous night. We saw torture devices, weapons and all things pirate!

Another hot day, but as the pool was undergoing maintenance, we only have cold showers to get away from the heat!!
