Velella velella

Another morning walk along the shores of Monterey Bay. It is the time of the year when these creatures get washed up on the beach at low tide. There are hundreds. Some make it back to the ocean, some do not. There is much discussion in the scientific community as to what they are. Here is one of the simpler explanations by the CNRS in France.
