Packhorse bridge - Birstwith

The Nidderdale way footpath crosses the river Nidd via this lovely old packhorse bridge just outside Birstwith in North Yorkshire.

This very fine packhorse bridge is a really beautiful monument to past art. The monks from Fountains Abbey travelled this way with their packhorses, weighed down with wool for the mills of Yorkshire and Lancashire, returning with cotton and supplies for their needs.
