The New Cut

To make Bristol a 'Floating Harbour' the tidal River Avon was diverted round the harbour which had locks installed at either end so that ships didn't dry out on the mud and could be loaded and unloaded round the clock. This huge cut was dug out by hand between 1804-9. More info here
