and it is an overload moment!

We were supposed to go snorkelling today over Roman ruins at the Phlegraean Fields near Naples - it was a treat we were all looking forward to but things conspired against us...Firstly the sun that we spent far too long in on the island on Tuesday had left the children shall we say a bit pink and there was no way they could endure another sun beating - plus they were still feeling all a bit jaded from that experience. Secondly the Naples Archeological Museum had been shut the previous day and so we needed to fit that in on this day instead - leaving us very little time to get out to the snorkelling area by public transport. So we made the collective decision that on this trip snorkelling wasn't to be...

The Museum was fantastic - the frescoes, mosaics and statues just incredible and a complete highlight...however the kids just might have hit museum overload - as seen by Sienna facial expression as I captured her and she wasn't the only one of the five walking around doing this! So we finished up and went home to rest - the heat of Naples is intense!

To finish off our time there we had decided to do the Sub-terain Tour which takes you underground into the aqueducts of Naples that have been there since Greek time and were used as bombing shelters in WW11. Unfortunately we got a little confused at first and paid for and entered a Church near to where we thought the tour was - as they advertised some underground Roman tunnels. Thinking it was strange that it was unguided and finished in ten minutes we suddenly realised that we were in the wrong place and raced to the other one - eventually catching up with the English tour. All best laid plans and that...

Another fantastic experience - especially the 10 minutes squeezing (and I mean squeezing) through tiny tunnels by candle light, followed by entering people's homes to see the ruins of the Roman amphitheatre that the houses had been built over - quite incredible.

Then it was home through the snaking streets, moving out of the way of scooters crammed with families and back to our apartment where were 'lulled' to sleep by the drunken rows of our neighbours and spontaneous outbreaks of fireworks! Classic.
