Migrant in Moscow

City scene

I headed south this afternoon on a historical excursion to the southern suburbs of Johannesburg. To places like Booysens and Turffontein, settled in the late 1800s and early 1900s by mine workers, later joined by soldiers returning from WWII, and then other migrants, many of them southern European in origin (there still a strong Portuguese presence). More recently, the area has changed character again, by becoming home to waves of new migrants, many from the north, from places in Central Africa.

It was not a great day for photography (mostly through the windows of a moving bus) but I thought this shot of the city center stood out. Better seen in LARGE.
