Wolfe Tone

This statue of Wolfe Tone, who was a leading figure in the United Irishmen Irish independence movement and is regarded as the father of Irish republicanism stands in the square, Bantry. He died from a wound that he received after being sentenced to death for his part in the Irish Rebellion of 1798 whether self-inflicted or otherwise remains questionable, at any rate, it deprived him of the chance to appeal his death sentence.
