Beam Engine

We visited MOTAT today. It's Auckland's Museum of Transport and Technology. As it was Thursday we were able to see the steam powered beam engine in action. It was made in Scotland 150 years ago and was used to pump water to a reservoir tank on Mount Eden so that it could be delivered to the city.

It took some minutes to coax the beam engine into action, but once it was running it was a beauty of engineering.
